How to forecast your data consumption when traveling?

You’re ready to travel, you’ve decided on your next destination, and you’re choosing your eSIM from Simly!

But the most challenging thing may be knowing your consumption during the trip.

So how much data will you need? Well it depends!

How long is your stay? Are you there for leisure or work? Are you a social mediaholic or an influencer? What apps do you usually need in your hometown or abroad?

But don’t worry, you aren’t in deep water! You can always top up your Simly plan when you run out of gigabytes. Learn more here.

Your consumption now... Your consumption then

Simply, how much data you usually spend will give you a good guess of how much you need while abroad.

Checking your mobile phone bills, data usage insights, and the apps that consume the most data when you use them actively or in the background is one of the best ways to figure out how much data you will need while traveling abroad.

You can always check how much data you will be using on your trip through your Simly account or device setting. Check our article for more about that.

What apps are you planning to use?

If you are an average user - average is 3 hours daily- a 3 GB plan  will serve your data usage needs for a week. That includes Google search, maps, social media and messaging, and listening to music, each for 45 minutes per day.

Let’s say you weren’t average! So you like to share every moment with your followers, or you like to have daily video calls with friends and family. Then you might consider buying a bigger plan doubling the amount of data.

How long is your stay?

The time you spend at your destination really matters when it comes to knowing your data consumption.

The longer your trip is, the more data you need. After calculating how much data you use, multiply that with the number of days you’re staying abroad.

If your usage is 0.5 GB per day and you’re off for 6 days, get a package of an approximate 3 GB of data.

Are you there for leisure or work?

If you're on a business trip, you'll need to stay connected 24 hours a day, seven days a week to avoid missing out on communicating with colleagues, partners, clients, and so on. Apps like Zoom, Skype, Web browsers, Instagram require high data usage, and eventually need bigger data plans.

When you're on the road, for a vacation to chill, your biggest worry is staying in touch with family and friends. Your data usage then will probably be limited to more economic apps like WhatsApp video calls or Facebook Messenger calls.

How can you monitor your data usage?

Just a few steps on your device’s settings, and you got it.

If you are using an iPhone, or any other iOS operating device, go to:

  • Settings
  • Cellular/Mobile Data
  • Current Period Roaming

If you are an Android user, go to:

  • Settings
  • Network and Internet
  • Data Usage or Mobile Network
  • Mobile

Top up your plan through the Simly App

Are you running out of data? Here comes the good news.

You can use our “top up” feature, if you have already purchased a rechargeable eSIM.

All you need is to follow these simple steps:

1. Log into your Simly account (ensure you are logged in to the same account used for purchasing the eSIM you wish to top up).

2. Go to My eSIMS

3. Tap “Top up” on the eSIM you wish to add a new package

4. Select the Top-up package you wish

Take into consideration all factors

  • If you’re traveling for work, you will need more data than if you’re going for fun.
  • Longer trips mean more data usage.
  • The nature of apps you use, and the time you spend using them matters when deciding the amount of data needed on the trip

And, keep in mind that you can always top up your plan with Simly if you need to. We’ll love the feeling of relief you’ll get when you do it.
